Our world is designed to fulfill as many of our desires as easily and readily available as possible. We audaciously attempt to build a world that responds to each and every desire. The underlying notion is that desires unmet cause pain. And we should do everything in our power to avoid pain. Yet, as many of us have personally experience, pain brings growth. When - as a society - we avoid pain by responding to every desire, we also stop growing. We stagnate. Our desires though are also what makes us human.
The art of living (sustainably) then lies in knowing which desires to fulfill and which desires to deny.
